Nickel & Nickel Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville, Napa Valley, California. Discover the distinction of our home vineyard. Rooted in the heart of Napa Valley, this Oakville Cabernet's allure lies in its expressive plum and red fruit flavors, supple tannin core, toasted oak accents, and seductive finish. The 2019 John C. Sullenger Cabernet Sauvignon is classic Napa Valley with aromas of blackberry and red plum and a touch of earthiness and spice. Upon entry, this wine seduces the palate with dark fruit flavors with black licorice and black olive tapenade notes. Melting on the palate with a long, supple finish supported by beautiful velvet tannins throughout.
Vinous 95: The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon John C. Sullenger is a potent, tightly wound wine. It shows a bit more savoriness and overall austerity than the Stelling Cabernet, which is not a bad thing, as both are terrific expressions of Oakville. Dried herbs, autumn leaves, tobacco, cedar, menthol, pine, and sweet red cherry build as 2019 opens with a bit of coaxing. Give the tannins a few years to soften—best after 2026.
James Suckling 93:Aromas of cooked dark cherries, blueberries, sweet spices, and bay leaves. Medium-bodied with round tannins. It is polished with a velvety texture and a flavorful, fresh, and supple finish. Drink or hold.
The Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel Story
Their history was shaped by dreamers, doers, and artisans — all pursuing perfection in winemaking. Far Niente was founded in Oakville, California, in 1885 by John Benson, a forty-niner of the California gold rush and uncle of the famous American impressionist painter Winslow Homer. Benson hired architect Hamden McIntyre, and together they worked to create an exquisite oasis in western Oakville.
Far Niente prospered until the onset of Prohibition in 1919. The gates closed, but the magic never truly disappeared from the property. Gil Nickel bought and restored the winery and neighboring vineyard sixty years later. This three-year-long labor of love put the label back on the map — and the National Register of Historic Places. He preserved the Far Niente name — an Italian phrase that romantically translated means ‘without a care.’ Nickel hoped to recapture a bygone era when life was true without care.
To this day, Far Niente is consistently recognized as a benchmark producer of Napa Valley Chardonnay and Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Theirs is an unparalleled level of time-honored winemaking traditions. This has helped establish Far Niente as one of the world’s great wine estates.
